Common questions in this chat
What is the penalty for overstaying in Malaysia?
Staying beyond a pass's expiry is an offence under section 15(4) of the Immigration Act, punishable by a fine, imprisonment or both. The department also lists a compound (settlement fee) as an option in some cases. Whipping applies to living without any pass (section 6(3)), not overstay itself. Check the department page for current amounts. Source: imi.gov.my/index.php/en/main-services/entry-requirement-into-malaysia-en/frequently-committed-offences/. Checked: 2026-10.
What deposits do KL landlords ask for?
Convention is '2+1+½': two months' security deposit, a half-month utility deposit and one month's advance rent. None is fixed by law (Malaysia has no Residential Tenancy Act in force), so amounts are negotiable. Get a written tenancy agreement and an inventory list, and get the deposit terms and refund conditions in writing. Source: iproperty.com.my/guides/rental-agreement-malaysia-guide-52519. Can I open a Malaysian bank account as a tourist or newcomer?
Usually you need a long-stay pass (Employment Pass, student, MM2H or dependant pass); social-visit holders generally cannot open a standard account and are limited to e-wallets. Expect to bring passport and pass, sometimes an employer or university letter and a Malaysian address, and visit a branch (Maybank and CIMB are often named). Do I need to fill in the MDAC before flying to Malaysia?
Yes: since 2024 most foreign travellers must complete the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online shortly before arrival (Singapore citizens, diplomatic passports and long-term pass holders are exempt). Several missions also say your passport must stay valid for a minimum period and visa-free periods differ by nationality. Check the MDAC site for the current timing. What does the DE Rantau Nomad Pass require?
MDEC's FAQ sets a minimum annual income (different for tech and non-tech roles), a pass valid for a limited period, and a non-refundable processing fee for the main applicant and each dependent plus SST. Remote-worker contracts must have run for a minimum time and your passport must be valid long enough. Check MDEC for the latest FAQ version and amounts.
